American composer Michael Ellison spent ten years working in Istanbul and has imbued much of the Turkish musical culture and style, notably demonstrated in this new opera, in two acts, commissioned by Istanbul Music Festival where it was premiered in 2012. Turkish instruments and vocal styles blend with Western operatic tradition in this work based on the legend and poetry of Rumi (Mevlana) the historic mystic.
