Teodor Currentzis was born in Greece but has lived and worked in Russia since the early 1990s, when he began studying at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. In 2006 he founded the Territoria Modern Art Festival which has quickly become the most prestigious progressive annual music festival in Moscow. He has received the prestigious Golden Mask theatrical award many times, most recently in 2015, and previous awards include Best Opera Conductor (for Wozzeck at the Bolshoi in 2009).
While Music Director of the Novosibirsk State Opera and Orchestra between 2004 and 2019, Mr. Currentzis founded the ensemble and chamber choir of MusicAeterna, now resident in Perm. The ensemble is now the orchestra of Perm State Theatre of Opera and Ballet, of which Mr. Currentzis is now Artistic Director, and is undergoing extensive tours of new productions throughout Europe.
