Musical Opinion

Divine Art Records continue with their fascinating explorations of the byways of music with this very well played and recorded CD, largely made up of recent American works and very well presented to us by this excellent University orchestra. The symphony by Thomas Fortmann is well worth hearing, a cleverly written and impressive piece that held my attention throughout. Robert Nelson’s Capriccio for violin and orchestra is another work that makes a very positive impression especially in this excellent performance in which the soloist Andrzej Grabiec is outstanding.

Peter Lieuwen’s ‘Astral Blue’ is a compelling piece in what might be termed a modern post-impressionist style, an orchestral study exhibiting notable creative imagination, and the final work, an orchestration of Percy Grainger’s evergreen ;Lincolnshire Posy’ brings this uncommonly interesting programme to a delightful conclusion.
