The Observer

Recently appointed to the staff of the University of Bristol, Geoffrey Poole has composed in most genres, with some of his earlier output coloured by a two-year period spent in Ghana. This selection of chamber his works features his String Quartet No.3 (1997) in a live performance by the Lindsays which draws an unusual array of sounds as it traces the time zones represented by a sundial. The episodic title work, Septembral, is skilfully played by Gemini. These are framed by The Impersonal Touch for two pianos, where the ordered minimalism of one instrument is disrupted by the other, and the perceptive Firefinch for oboe and piano, athletically performed by Jinny Shaw.
